What is Rasa?
"Rasa" (रस) is a Sanskrit word that means "juice, essence or taste".
It is used in Indian arts to connotes a concept that cannot be described but it is yet present as it is the aesthetic flavor of any visual, literary or musical work that evokes an emotion or feeling in the reader or audience. "Rasa" truly refers to the emotional charged crafted into the work by the artist and relished by a 'sensitive spectator'. When Rasa is present, the artistic creation has the power to awaken the "sensitive mind" or "emotional mind" of whoever is the receiver of the art in question. Rasas come with another important concept which is Bhava. Bhava is the "State of mind", or all the instrument you need to create a specific state of mind that will allow "Rasa" to rise within the artist and consequentially within the audience. Without Bhava, Rasa cannot rise and the art will not have flavor. |
